A photoshop cs2 Q.?

Ok, I was wondering in Photoshop cs2 if u can take an image like say of someone and make it clear so if u want to put it on a back ground with a pattern you could see the background but you could still see like a shadow of the image u wanted to make clear. Any help is very much appreciated! Thanks.
